Well, and yet another time, it all ended up the opposite way I planned. I was leaving with a Russian Couchsurfer, for a very long Bicycle trip around the country. We first had to go back to the Vietnam border as she needed a Visa extension. We ended up taking some small dirt roads along the Mekong river, and we had lots of contact with the rural people. They are super open and friendly and some stretches felt like a parade for Astronauts coming back from the moon. Everybody shouting "Hello", kids running after us, Families waving, and all together. We spend some nights at Buddhist Temples and the Monks where very friendly and spared no effort to make us comfortable! But soon some doubts came up, as I learned to appreciate to travel by myself during the last 10 month. There where just to many things and discussion that made everything very complicated. As this is my own journey, I like to be the captain, and not the servant. Half way back from the border, we went separate ways. My plan was to head over to the Ocean, but as it is in Cambodia, I had to take a massive detour back to Phnom Penh. When I arrived late in the evening, I decided to head back to my previous Couchsurfers place. He was very kind, and since then I am enjoying Phnom Penh. Originally I was on my way to Thailand Bangkok, to somehow catch a Plane back to Germany, as I am totally broke. As for now, I can say this trip was amazing, and any future work would be only to finance the next trip. Suddenly my host made me the offer to get a job here. It took him one phone call and I had my Job Interview. I went there and left after 15 min. with a done deal.
But unlike I imagined before, this will be a true challenge. They want me to teach 10 different grades, kids aged 2-15 years. As I am the first Foreigner teacher at their school they expect me to do some miracles... Tomorrow I will have my first day there to have a look. But to be honest I am pretty scared, this will not be a smooth walk around the Lake. On the other side, this is one hell of a great opportunity. A once in a lifetime chance, to start something new and fill it up with all the good ideas you have, make the things right that you hated about your teachers. And I work with awesome Cambodian kids. From my trip with the bicycle, I know I like them, and they like me. Just adorable... :) Anyway, I will stay here somewhat around 6 month. I hope I can save enough to hit the road for another couple of month. We will see... But anyway, it was once more, just totally amazing how everything just fell into place. I did not have to bend one finger and everything good in this universe just fell in to my hands...
I will try to update you on Cambodia and Phnom Penh in a while, its a very strange/funny country :)

take care and have fun

Vietnam to Cambodia

So well many things happened, I try to make it quick. I ended up in Nah Trang in Vietnam, which turned out to be a super famous Tourist destination. I stayed there over Christmas with a Host from the US and many other CSer from Israel, Argentina, Singapore and China. That was something funny, as it was a very different Christmas. After maybe a week I moved on to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). I did not really like Saigon, as it was not even close to the beauty of Hanoi. So I was looking for alternatives, and yet found a Host in a remote but big City in the very south, called Long Xuyen. I never heard or saw before, and that was what motivated me the most to go there. What was meant for a few days during New Year ended up for a month.... I stayed in a House where many generations of a Family lived. Started with the Grandmother aged 85 uncles aunties, cousins, sons and daughters down to 6 years. I was welcomed very warm right away, and everybody treated my like a good old friend. The first week we spend like going like everywhere in the city and with a high percentage of certainty I can say that I have seen everything :) Then New Year came and it was the most quiet I have ever seen in my life. Even though we went out for beers, there was NOBODY on the streets. The whole city was just dead empty, there was not a single cracker, or rocket launched, your heard nobody scream, while in your head you imagined all the enormous parties that would go on all around the Globe that day. It was definitely a funny experience.  In the remaining weeks my main entertainment was drinking coffee, ah this Vietnam coffee is just the best I had in my life and I will miss it very hard. But also I helped in the Families own business, which was a design, print and copy shop. It was a very unique experience, and I had the chance to see Vietnam from a very different viewpoint. I made some good friends over there. In addition, I got to know how it feels to be at least a B-VIP :) As I was almost the only foreigner in the City, almost everybody who I walked passed by was talking to me. After a few days you just want to walk the street in silence, unrecognised :) Not that I hold it against the Vietnam people, it just shows how open and super friendly they are, and  I now whish we in Germany would treat our guest like this. Yes I think we could take a big slice of that. Now "Luna New Year" came, and after it was over, I can say, its a mixture of Christmas and New Year. It is mainly a Family celebration, as EVERYBODY goes home, it doesn’t mater where you are. Yes there was also a big Firework (@10pm) where almost the whole city gathered, but that event lasted only for like 2 hrs. The main celebrations last for 3 days and they put a lot of effort in that, making Christmas look like a birthday party. Yet most of that effort goes within the Family, so from the outside it does not look to spectacular. Yet I was lucky enough to have seen it from insight. Now I moved on to Cambodia, and even though these two cultures are so close and have been intermixed during different wars in the past, it is very different. I am only here since 3 days and could tell so many crazy stories, but for now there is no time. Tomorrow I leave, kind of spontaneous, with a Russian Couchsurfer for a 3 weeks Cycle trip around Cambodia, which will be in many ways a very new experience. I will try to keep you posted.

Vietnam

Days on the Road: 266   (22.12.2011)

Location: Nha Trang, Vietnam

Here I am again. While in Seoul I booked  a flight to Manila in the Philippines. When I arrived at the Airport in the morning, the Boarding crew refused to take me on the Plane as I had only a one way ticket. I had only little time left but was not able to come up with a suitable solution. I had to stay longer in Korea and try to figure something else. My money for the Flight was gone, and in addition my Bank refuses access to my account so I cant check anymore on my financial status, although I think I don’t want to know :) My new destination would than be Vietnam. But again there was a return flight mandatory and I saw
another 300$ go down the drain. But as winter made himself comfortable in Korea, and the temperature dropped below -4°C along with some snow, I had no choice but to accept the loose and move on. From there on everything went easy and I arrived in Hanoi City in the night and was lucky to still get a host. Vietnam reminds me a lot of Poland, there are so many nice old building but due to the lack of money left in bad shape. Even when you travel the country side you rarely find an ugly building. Hanoi was very crowded and the main source of transportation is the "Motorbike", and it seems like that every citizen has at least one! The traffic laws have been replaced long time ago by just honking the horn. Which sounds fun at the first few hrs. gets pretty annoying after two days. Overall I walked so much around in Hanoi that after 3 days I almost could not walk anymore. its a beautiful City with lots of parks and lakes. But the downside is that in Vietnam there is not a real waste management, and it does not matter what it is, it just gets thrown on the ground where you stand. It shocked me most when I took the Train and we where riding throughout the nature and rice fields and everybody would just throw his plastic waste out of the window, creating a waste site along the train tracks. So as said I left Hanoi by Train and for 300 Km we needed 12 hrs. I chose Dong Hai as it was the next City, close to the ocean with a nice beach. I arrived late at night and made my way to the beach and set up for the night. While I left Hanoi in pure Sunshine, the next morning was just cloudy all day. I took a walk in the City but there was not much to see. The following day it started to rain, at least half the day. I thought it could only get better but the next day along with even more rain came strong winds. While I camped out there I got many visitors, mostly older man who where fishing at the ocean or the worker from the nearby construction site. I was THE sensation as they most likely have never seen a western guy camping. They all pointed to the nearby "Sun Spa Resort" Hotel, asking why I am not there. So the third day, when the weather got really bad and my tent was on the brink of collapsing two of the guys from the construction site showed up again and invited me over to their shed. As there was no hope on the horizon I gathered my stuff and followed them. There where 6 of them living in this 12 m² room which also was functioning as a garage for three of their Motorbikes. They all could not speak English and we communicated by sign language and drawings on paper. And again it was proven to me that those who have almost nothing, like to share everything with you. We spend almost all day in the Shed as it was raining. In the early night I went out with one of them to the town to drink a coffee. When I came back I saw that my Backpack was opened, and the youngest started to talk about Camera and Laptop. He clearly went through my stuff, which kind of made me feel uncomfortable. Now with my permission he wanted to check out everything. I let him play with my Camera and while in the beginning I was not really sure where this will lead to I later realised that this guy has never touched a device like this in his life. All 7 of us sleep together in the Shed. The next morning after breakfast I gather my stuff and leave to take a train southbound. As like my first ride with the train, there is again almost not a single boring moment. There are people constantly inviting you to chat, and as for Vietnam its safe to say, that you can connect the best with the locals in the train. On my first ride I met a guy from Hue and he did Invite me to stay over at his place. But once I was on my way and called him from the Train, he changed his mind, which I am not surprised as home hospitality is not very usual in Asia! To my luck I meet two other guys on the rain who will help me to find a cheap Hotel. I hate Hotels, and tried to avoid them as much as possible, but my shoes, my tent and a good portion of my cloth are wet. As its still massively raining I have not a big choice. On my last day I meet up with them two again and they take me around the nice places in Hue, which is a beautiful place. I leave Hue after two days to Nha Trang 600 Km down the coast in the last hope to see some sun. After a 16 hr Journey with the slow TN1 Train I am still faced with a lot of rain. But at least I have a place at a couchsurfer. He is a dive Instructor and now we are waiting for good weather so we can go out for a nice dive.

South Korea

Now I am in South Korea! I left Japan more or less in a rush, because my friend from South Korea had a business trip coming up and I had to wrap my plans to go there around this. I will go back to Japan as soon as possible as it was the biggest positive surprise on my trip. I met so many nice people and can tell so many stories of good things that happened to me.  But as I only have little time these days tow rite here just two:
--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. I got picked up by a an elderly woman, she could not speak English and i could not speak Japanese.
She was talking constantly anyway, and for the 20 min. we just laughed constantly because it was just so funny. She was swearing a lot about the villages and that they are old school, and that she was going for work and being kind of late, so much I understood.
She asked me where I sleep and if I need something to eat, I said I am fine, thx. We finally reached the destination and I get off thanked her very much. I positioned myself on the On ramp to the Highway. I waited there about 15 min. when that woman suddenly returned. She handed me a sign made from cardboard saying "Tottori" in Japanese. In addition she gave me a bag containing bread, beer and some cookies. I was speechless and was just the happiest guy on Planet earth! She must have given a fuck about work, going to the supermarket to buy the food, searching in the Trash for a piece of Cardboard, all that  hoping that I would still be there when she would get back!

.-----------------------------------------------------------

2. I Hitchhiked with two woman into the city Yonago. To my bad, they dropped me in the outskirts in front of the City. What I soon learned was, that the City was stretched along the coast for maybe 15 km. Since it was only around 11 in the morning, I faced the challenge and started to walk. I took some small breaks along the way at the beach, that I had all to myself. Earlier I had my self already equipped with extra water and food, as I planed to camp out
in the National Park about 20 km behind Yonago, raising the weight of my bag to at least 20 Kg. I had maybe walked my self 2/3 throughout the city without finding any place to hitchhike, when  my feet started to hurt very badly and I realised I would not make it. I was looking for the next entrance to the beach to set up for the night. As I walked I randomly looked to my left and there was a car with a young woman that smiled at me and was pointing at the open seat next to her. It was just like in one of the cheese Hollywood happy endings that are to good to be true! I hopped in and she said she would drive me out to my destination as it was her day off and she had nothing to do anyway. On the way we went to a Tower on the beach over looking the whole city. She initially paid for both of us which was 600 Yen, but in the car I gave her back the 600. From the tower we could see the Lighthouse at the tip of the National Park and we decided that she would drive me there. We did not talk very much as her English was not to good and I was super tired and totally exhausted to try to keep up a conversation. We reached the Lighthouse and walked around a bit, and I spotted a  path that lead up the mountain through the jungle. As the Sun was going down I said Ill get off here . I thanked her very much and multiple times for her great help and then we went separate ways. I climbed that path with my last energy, hoping to reach the top before sunset. It was very step, rocky and a lot of spider webs in my face, and after 2.2 km and 40 min. I reached the top. The next morning I woke up with the light but at the same time the rain started. At first I hoped for a quick shower but as a I learned later it would rain the whole day. The first rain break was around 10 am and I left the tent for a quick stretch. As I walked around the tent I see a plastic bag. At first I though I dropped it as there was no one else passing by at any time. But then I realised I wasn’t me. So I opened it, and the bag  was full of food. There was a piece of paper saying "Are you starving? Be careful. Takako" and in another piece there where my 600 Yen plus another 500. Leave aside all the material goodies. That girl drove her car 60 min. and walked at least 50. min through the Japanese  mountain jungle, either late at night or very early in the morning. Just to drop somebody some food that she has known only for 1 hr and will never see again in her life. There was nothing expected in return, not even a phone nr. or email so I could write how thankful I am and that the nuts and dry fruits totally made my day as I had to stay 20 hrs in my tent.
Every time I Imagine her walking that path I get get tears in my eyes

--------------------------------------------------

So on my way to Shimonoseki, from where the Ferry would go to Busan in South Korea, I got picked up by
these two guys that had nice little Restaurant with and India shop in it. They invited me to stay there over night. During the day I took  a long walk to the biggest Cave in East Asia, and then we talked the whole night at  a campfire. The next day a friend of theirs showed up and later in the afternoon he took me to the Highway. I got 1 ride and they would drive me all the way to Shimonoseki. I arrived and had to walk about 30 min to reach the Ferry Terminal. I got there and the next Ferry was in 40 min. While the next one would only be the next day in the morning! So I was more than lucky and everything fell in to place perfectly once more! The ride would go all the way throughout the night. 2nd class guest would sleep in a shared room with 10+ other people. I did not like the Idea so I set myself up in front of the ship as there was a very nice warm wind going outside! We arrived in the morning but had to wait another 2 hrs until they let us off. first 2 hrs in Busan where designated to find Internet and set my self with the new Country. Then I made my way to the Highway. On Digihitch i read before that you get rides within 5 minutes! So I was curious to find out! And it worked. South Korea is the best Country for Hitchhiking I have ever experienced so far. I took me 4 rides and I was from one side of the country to the other at the meeting point with my friend! But I witnessed something very crazy! While is was waiting for my second ride, I was standing in a very bad spot! Right after a Highway toll station where a  7 Lane Highway merged in to a 3 way. There was no Emergency lane. As I was waiting I looked behind me on the Highway and there was a car going very slow in reverse on the Highway. I have never ever seen such a crazy stunt in public traffic in my life, and I thought it must be real bad emergency and possibly some one is dying! I watched it for maybe 4 min. as they proceeded very slowly backwards! Than I said to myself I gota check out what’s wrong and maybe I can help. As I got closer  I got waved over and I ran to the car. There was a young couple and the actually reversed for me. They just saw me to late and where on the outside lane, and now trying to make their way back to pick me up. I think it is nor exaggerating if I say this might be the most dangerous Hitchhiker Pickup on earth! They turned out to be super cool and invited me to their home when I come by there anyway!

Around the world

Days on the Road: 182

-----------------------------

Well now I am on the road since 6 month, and speaking in distance I have travelled the world! Over 40.000 Km, and I still feel I have not even started! As a mater of fact, thinking of returning to an ordinary life, and staying somewhere for more than a moth seems impossible at the moment! There is so much much to see and so much to miss in this world. I am just mad at my self that I did not start earlier! Anyway, I left Tokyo, with the ambition to Hitchhike. But as it is, it was raining, and I could not find as proper spot, since the Japanese like to built small and tight. I ended up walking 20 Km throu first ghout Tokyo. And when I finaly found a good spot, night came over me. At first I made my self comfortable in a Entrance of an Apartment complex. I was almost fainting out, when I got woken up again and send away :) Found my self a bridge between the Highways, where I could set my tent for a couple of hrs. Next morning my muscles where very sore, but I catched a ride, untill Gotenba which is close to Mt. Fuji where I wanted to go. Got a another one. with the top 4 Ice-Speed-Skater of Japan (haha) who brought me to the base of Fuji. I crossed the Gate to teh National park, and since I was by foot I didnt had to pay. Made my way around the corner and started to Hitchhike. And guess what, I got picked up by and elderly and retired couple HAHA, well I did them all! I arrived half the way up on Mt. Fuji, at the 5th Station wich is 2300 m. It was already 4 pm, and the Info said 6 Hrs climed. Since I was still evry tired there was no way I wanted and could make it today. So I set my self in the woods. It was the most quiet place I had ever camped! There was no noise at all. The next morning I was ready to climb. I got myself a Country Noodle soup for breakfast and off I went. I had 200 ml water, 3 apples and 100 g peanuts. I started energetic, overtaking everyone in my path, untill i reached the end of the first 3rd. At that point my water was almost gone, and I was thirsty as fuck. I realised that I had totaly understimated that rock. To my luck, when I reached the half way, I met a Japan climber who was on his way down. He looked at my empty bottle and realised he had to help that newb :) He gave me a fresh full bottle two High carb peanut bars, and some 02 Tablets which I was supposed to take on top :) Now well equipped i reached the top after 4.5 Hrs with a beak every 2 min. It was just totaly beautyfull up there. On the top I met a another german guy from Munich who provided me with more food and drinks. The way down was very fast, but my muscles still hurt from that descent, even after 4 days! I went to Bed early this evening, but still had a nice campfire. I liked camping at the Mountain. No noise, no bugs, no ants and no people and a lot of good firewood :) I took not long and I found a good spot a little down the Hill. A few cars passed me in the morning sun. Then a guy by foot passed me. We talked quickly and he was from france, just comming down from Fuji, walking to his car. Jean-Yeves, trainer of the Franc Kajak National Team, was going to Nagoya, and happy to bring me along. We had a quick and nice ride. But I did not plan to come no Nagoya and had to place to stay. Long story very short, I slept the night under the rooftop of a bar entrance. It was comfortable but I got woken by the Police at 6:30 :) After a little breakfast I headed to Trainstation since there was now way I would continoue the walking from Tokio. I catched a Train for 2000yen to Tsrugu at the west coast! The day before I wrote a request to a guy living a few towns down the coast. I was lucky and he replied and was even happy to host me the same day! So I had to Hitchhike there. Bu it was still raining. But as it is I am just Lucky!!! A guy stops, speaks almost no english, he drives me 45 km to "Obama" and then all the way back. Thats Japanese Style! He only tells me while we are on the way, and I feel very bad! Since I have nothing to give him, I tipp him 500 yen. I get picked up in Obama by my host, and he has the perfect house like a Japanese dream! I will post pics later. Had such a great time here in Obama.... It was just the ebst decission to leave Nagoya. I realised that I have seen enough City´s on my way. In the end they are all the same, and there is nothing to special. And I loved the few days out here in the nature more than any other city before. Its so beautyful in Japan, cant wait to see the rest of the coast!

Ok friends, it has been a very long time. After I spend a few weeks in San Diego I finaly was able to use my credit card to book a flight to Tokyo. But before that I was going to fullfill my promise to my friends in Phoenix to come by again! I started very early Hitchhiking in the morning the Highway "On Ramp" was right across the Door! First ride is with a Guy from Jamaika in a "Porsche Cayenne", now the only stereotype group to have hitchhiked with I am missing is an elderly couple! :) I was catching rides very easy, I got offerd food 3 times and was getting water from everybody. Only nice people and the longest I had to wait was 1 hr but I was standing at the highway. My last ride took a 30 miles detour and droped me right in front of Rachels house, right about when it started to turn dark. I had 3 faboulous days with awesome food and good drinks at different parts of the city. The last night I only had 3 hrs of sleep, woke up very drunk, and had to get ready to catch my Bus. I wanted to go with Greyhound since I had to make sure I would get to LA to catch my flight since there would be no refund! But as it is, when there is time pressure than things dont work out. I arrived at the station but then had to learn that the bus I intended to take was allready booked. I had to wait another 3 hrs, for the next. But surprise, surprise, the Bus was delayed for over one hr. The ride itself was relaxed and I had two seats to myself to achive some comfortablity. But when I arrived it was already 12 in the night, and I was far off the Subway. It took me about another hr. untill I reached the house of Lucas but when I arrived there I did not want to ring the bell since I knew he had a bunch of surfers allready. I instead went to 24hr restaurant arround the corner, catched the last beer of the night and had a beansoup n vegieburger.
After hanging out there for a while and talking to the waitress, I went back to the house. I was lucky to catch the wifi and had some funny conversation with friends from Belgium/Ger which made the night pass by very quickly. In the morning, while I was sitting at the steps there was a humming bird flying half an arme lengt right in front of my face for 10 sec and looked me straight in the eyes. That was just so amazing and totaly worth sitting half the night out on the streets! When I finaly got in went to sleep for a couple of hours! The next morning I took of early and made it to the Airport. Just before boarding was starting they called out my name via speaker. They wanted me to sign a paper that the Airline informed me that I might get rejected at Japanese Imigrations, since I only had a one way ticket! That kind of scared me. But when
I arrived in Japan, Immigration was the easiest so far. They did not even ask ONE question, phew!! Now I made my way to my Hosts place, i dropped my stuff and off we went to one of the many downtowns arround here. We visited some maiden Cafes which I learnd are world famous and have their origin here. I visited many places in downtown,
Japan is so much more crazy than you can Imagine from all the stories. I think stereotype is just the perfect word, and I don´t mean that in a negative way, they just live up to their reputation, which other country only to for their negative ones! :)
For my birthday my host and I met up with some other couchsurfers, from the US, UK, Mexico. We went for some cheap drinking, but Japanese, on average a little smaller than, than German folks, dont seem to drink to much. After 1 Beer and I guess 3 Cocktails and 1 B52 Shot we where still pretty sober, so we went for some more Beer and Sake at 7-11. Now well prepared we headed to, as I have been toled, to on of the top 10 Clubs of the World, the "Womb". Finally some fine Clubing untill the earlie morning, and we had a lot of fun :)

What a week..

-----------------------------

Holly moly that was a hell of a week... I am now in San Diego! After my last blog entry I was sleeping in the Trucker rest area sitting at the table. It was only for two hrs and I went back outside with my sign hoping to get a ride. But the truckers here in the US don´t seem to like giving rides to other people :) I waited for maybe two more hrs until it finally stopped raining. Then I made my way to the "On Ramp" to Highway 40. I actually was preparing in my had the plan to make it to Fort Smith and catch a greyhound bus to Las Vegas, since hitching went really slow. I was there maybe 20 min. When a car stopped. Carolyn who was on her way home from her own "across the USA" adventure picked me up. She was going all the way to Arizona and my hope was rising again. While in the car I fell several time in some kind of delusional sleep where I just saw some strange colors and forms waving through my field of view. She drove me incredibly 1300 Km. She was very nice, and offed me different opportunities where I i could get dropped off. We reached some Gas station with a gift shop that looked kind of promising. I got off and got my self some french fries. While eating they said they close down the facility in 10 min. I went outside, and there was the next major rainstorm coming up juts above me. There was no was no place to go inside like the last days, and I prepared myself to sleep in the entrance since it has a little roof. From last night I knew that my little amateur tent would not withstand the massive rainstorms in this area. I was just standing there when a female truck driver came to the door. I told here that its closed and she got kind of upset, since the signs along the road said "24 Hrs". We started to chat, and since I knew by know that truck drivers don´t like to be asked directly I just say I am looking for a ride in a "CAR". She said she is sorry that she can´t take me along since its a Company Truck and she might loose her job. But she is still interested and I can explain the whole story to her. After 15 min. she is convinced that I am not a threat and she invites me in the truck and told me she would drive me 500 miles. We get in the truck at about 9pm and its just starting to rain. I am extremely tired and we have to wait until 12 in the night until she can start driving. She talks for one hr. and I am troubled to follow her. I havn´t laid down my body for almost 48 Hrs and have slept only 4 hrs in the same time. Never in my life was i so exhausted. At around 10 pm she offers me her bed in the back of the truck. Never in my life it felt so good to just lay down. It sounds strange but I am to tired to fall a sleep. When she starts driving at 12 she is fine with me staying in the bed. I am finally able to sleep. I wake up at 3 in the night and Join her in the front. She drops me at 5 in the morning at a big truck stop. I ask around but no luck. There is construction at the Highway, and traffic is slowed and forced to one lane. Seems like my best shot. After 20 min. there is a Jeep stopping at the on ramp behind me. That dude is going all the way to California. He drops me of at the perfect place to get to Vegas. Now I am in the dessert, it is extreme hot. But I am so lucky again. After only 15 min. a young man stops and he is very nice and even drops right in front of Hunters Apartment. I am there around 1 pm. That was a ride... the first few days I went so slow hitchhiking, and the day I started to loose faith and thought I might not make it, everything fell in to place so perfectly. I just love the way the universe is working. I made 2300 km with 4 rides in 30 hrs. right in front of the door I wanted to be. This is just so spectacular. Well now that I arrived in Las Vegas, I take a little nap while Hunter starts packing. I wake up at 1 in the night and we start to load the truck. We are ready around 4 and start driving. My day and night rhythm is completely messed up. We arrive at the apartment and its clean and spacious with a cosy carpet that feels like the clouds in heaven after the last days struggle.....
